Panic let herself into the apartment quietly, so as not to wake Frosty. It was pitch black, but she quit using a light on the stairs long ago. Funny to think when the power died, and never came back, she’d been caught without a light in a stairwell, and still didn’t learn her lesson for so long. Now she simply didn’t need a light.

“You were out late.”

She jumped. Anyone else she would have noticed, even in the dark. Frosty was damned good at being silent, though. He sat on a high stool at the breakfast counter between the kitchen and living room, notional sections of the intimate one-room studio.

“You scared me. I figured you were asleep.”

“What did you do tonight, Panic?”

“Oh, just out with the girls. You know, bonding.” She sidled into the kitchen, not sure yet whether she dared step past him.

“Cut the crap, baby girl. I can smell the blood on you.”

She stilled. And yes, she remembered where the paring knife was. Her hands felt the edge of the sink under her fingers, like the home row on a keyboard. Paring knife, butcher block knife-holder, an inch to the right of the sink against the backsplash. Just as automatically, she knew it would be terrible idea to draw a knife on him. She swallowed.

“Guess I didn’t wash well enough. Excuse me.” She took a step toward the bathroom.

“What did you do to Gordy, Panic?” he demanded.

She stopped, then turned to stand facing him across the counter. From this vantage, she could see his outline, a darker shade of black against the open drapes of the windows. “I took matters into my own hands. I gelded him.”

“Better. I’ve had three runners so far tell me,” he acknowledged. “They couldn’t tell me whether you personally wielded the knife. Did you?”

Evading this conversation had failed. “Yes. I did that. Another stitched him up after.”

“Why?”

He was beginning to weird her out with this even, controlled Frosty-tone. “He raped a –”

“He’s a rapist, yes, I caught that part,” Frosty interrupted. “I deal with that at court night.”

“Not always,” Panic argued. “I punished Hecate and her minions.”

“I need to know if I’m safe to sleep beside you.”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Frosty. I wouldn’t geld you!”

“You kind of did, metaphorically. Because I make the rules in this gang. But Panic, I didn’t ask what Gordy did. I asked why you would do such a thing.”

Panic paused in thought. Her answer to this question seemed crucial to him. He might feel the need to punish her publicly. Or kick her out of the apartment – or his life. She answered cautiously, “I did it to win respect. And approval. From the other girls. And to give them respect. Because they were angry. We weren’t sure you’d punish him enough.”

He reached out and caught her throat. “‘Enough’? I wouldn’t have mutilated a man!”

Oh. “May I speak?” He withdrew his hand. “If you exiled him, he would rape again. I was sure of it. The girls were sure of it.
